Top 10 Tuesday: Horror Weapons

What’s Top 10 Tuesday? It’s a new Top 10 List every Tuesday!

This Tuesday I take a look at some of the various weapons used in horror stretching across many sub-genres from zombie to slasher to J-Horror and even Sci-Fi.

Honorable Mention, Corn on the Cob
Sleepwalkers (1992)

One of the funniest and weirdest weapons in horror, is well, uh, corn on the cob. Used to stab someone in the back in Stephen King’s Sleepwalkers. Like they say, “No vegetables, no dessert.”

10. M41A Pulse Rifle
Alien Franchise

While not exactly remembered as a horror weapon, the M41A Pulse Rifle is iconic nonetheless. Capable of selective, burst & automatic firing, it’s the weapon of choice for the space marines in their fight against the Xenomorphs.

9. Piano Wire
Audition (1999)

Asami used piano wire with surgeon-like prowess to remove a foot while giggling the entire time. It’s pretty hard to run without feet.

8. Shotgun
Evil Dead Series

Ash William’s ranged weapon in the Evil Dead Series and used in countless other horror movies is the classic shotgun.

7. Machete

While Jason Voorhees has used a wide-variety of weapons in the Friday the 13th Series, it’s the machete that was always the go-to weapon of choice for hacking up campers.

6. Sentinel Sphere
Phantasm Series

The flying silver spheres from Phantasm are not only the key weapon of the Tall Man but are also unique in the fact that each contains the shrunken brain of his victims. Each sphere’s arsenal includes blades & lasers then finally a drill to drain a body completely of it’s blood.

5. Lawnmower
Braindead/Dead Alive (1992)

My personal favorite horror weapon and kill scene is Lionel’s use of the lawnmower in Braindead. He manages to chop up a ridiculous amount of zombies and the scene required the use of over 300 liters of “blood”. Other notable lawnmower kills include the Lawnmower Man series and Sinister. “Party’s Over!”

4. Freddy Krueger’s Glove
A Nightmare on Elm Street Franchise

Unique to Freddy Krueger and the Nightmare on Elm Street movies is Freddy’s trademarked gardening glove upgraded with sharpened blades.

3. Axe
Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984), Friday the 13th Part III & VII, The Shining (1980), American Psycho (2000), Madman (1982), My Bloody Valentine (1981)

The axe in it’s many forms (hatchet, tomawhawk, pick, etc.) is a classic go-to-weapon. It’s most iconic use is by Jack Nicholson in The Shining to chop down the door but my favorite use is Billy Chapman in Silent Night, Deadly Night.

2. Chainsaw
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Franchise, The Evil Dead Series, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1988), Motel Hell (1980), American Psycho (2000), etc.

Between Ash’s replaced hand in Evil Dead and the entire Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise the chainsaw is another of my personal favorite horror weapons. I’m not sure what it is exactly that makes it great but the noise makes it that much scarier. Also notably featured in Motel Hell and American Psycho.

1. Knife
Halloween Franchise, Psycho (1960), Sleepaway Camp (1983), Scream (1996)

While the knife may be one of the simplest weapons used in horror it’s also the most iconic and memorable. From the Psycho shower scene to the Halloween franchise to it’s renewed use in Wes Craven’s Scream it’s hard not to enjoy seeing a good horror movie stabbing.

With all the great weapons used in horror over the years, this was an extremely difficult list to put together. I look forward to seeing new and different ones used for kills in future horror films. See you next Tuesday for Top 10 Holiday Horror Movies!

Top 10 Tuesday: Godzilla Monsters

What’s Top 10 Tuesday? It’s a new Top 10 List every Tuesday!

After the recent passing of Haruo Nakajima who was the first actor to wear the Godzilla suit I decided to kick off Top 10 Tuesday with look at the various monsters who’ve made appearances in the nearly 30 Godzilla movies since 1954. I didn’t include Godzilla himself because it goes without saying, the King of the Monsters is and always will be #1.

Honorable Mention, Orga
First Appearance: Godzilla 2000 (1999)

What started as a group of Aliens known as the Millennians, before evolving into one of the most unique looking Godzilla monsters. Orga’s appearance is that of a super-deformed Godzilla after absorbing his DNA. Constantly evolving, Orga can adapt to any environment. He also features regeneration, a beam-cannon from the shoulder and a huge jaw which he uses to absorb DNA from his bite.

10. Anguirus
First Appearance: Godzilla Raids Again (1955)

Anguirus’s appearance is a spike covered mix of an Ankylosaurus and an armadillo. He was the first monster Godzilla ever fought but he’s usually one of his most loyal allies. While Anguirus lacks any energy attacks, he will literally fight tooth and nail (claw) with any adversary. He can also roll into a ball and use his back spikes to cause high speed chaos.

9. Megaguirus
First Appearance: Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000)

A giant mutated ancient dragonfly, Megaguirus appeared after a black hole weapon allowed it to arrive on Earth and lay an egg. The egg hatched it’s swarm which collected energy from Godzilla to feed it’s queen. The queen Megaguirus has faster speeds than even Mothra and Rodan, producing sonic waves that disable electronics. Her wings can cut through rock and steel and she’s got a stinger that can pierce to drain energy which she then uses to shoot a fireball.

8. Gigan
First Appearance: Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972)

One of Godzilla’s fiercest space-based enemies, Gigan is a cyborg with giant claw hands and a circular saw on it’s chest. While Gigan is a bi-pedal creature, he does have a bird-like face. Gigan has a huge amount of abilities including anti-gravity flight, the giant chest saw which has made Godzilla bleed, the hook hands (later upgraded to chainsaws), an eye-beam laser, flying razor discs and a scorpion tail.

7. Hedorah
First Appearance: Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971)

Hedorah is the alien emobidiment of pollution, a literal “smog monster”. Hedorah had many forms from tadpole, to water, to land, then flying and finally a large final form. While Hedorah is one of the most destructive monsters, that’s mostly due to it’s physical form. It’s entire body is an acidic sludge. In addition, Hedorah can split into smaller Hedorahs and re-combine, has an eye-laser and can launch it’s sludge as a weapon. Hedorah’s also one of the strongest monsters defensively being unaffected by Godzilla’s atomic breath.

6. Mechagodzilla
First Appearance: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)

There’s been multiple versions of Mechagodzilla but for this list i’m going with the original alien-created 1974 Mecha-G. Mechagodzilla’s appearance is just that, a mechanical robotic version of Godzilla. Mechagodzilla’s armor is made from highly durable “Space Titanium” and made even more defensive with a forcefield and limited but high-speed flight from rocket’s in the feet. It includes a viable arsenal of weapons like a 360 opitcal laser that’s as powerful as Godzilla’s atomic breath & a heat-beam. Mechagodzilla also had missles hidden in the fingers, knees, mouth & toes.

5. Biollante
First Appearance: Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989)

Biollante was created by the terrible idea of combining rose DNA with Godzilla’s DNA and even human DNA. She begins as her first form of a rose with teeth and tendrils. Evolving into a giant mass of plant and beast with an almost crocodile like appearance. Biollante can’t fly but can propel herself quickly thanks to the strong tendrils and she can regenerate lost mass (even part of her own head). Offensive capabilities include spitting radioactive sap and binding tendrils with the ability to pierce even Godzilla’s flesh. Biollante could even go invincible by turning into a cloud of spore energy.

4. Destoroyah
First Appearance: Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995)

Destoroyah takes on multiple evolutions in his first and only film appearance, with his final form being twice as big as Godzilla. His final form is quite demonic with bat wings, horns, spikes and a dark red color. The physical embodiment of the effects of 1954’s Oxygen Destroyer, Destoroyah places so high on this list because he not only manages to kill Godzilla junior but also Godzilla himself. Destoroyah has multiple beams (chest & horn), can absorb DNA to evolve and is highly durable (even surviving decapitation).

3. Rodan
First Appearance: Rodan (1956)

Rodan’s design is quite simple but very effective, he’s a giant irradiated Pterodactyl. Sometimes an enemy to Godzilla but more often an ally, Rodan is the perfect flying Kaiju. Rodan can carry monsters over twice his size in the air, is unaffected by Godzilla’s atomic breath, flies at supersonic speed and as “Fire Rodan” he can emit a heated radioactive beam. Rodan will make his first appearance in the Legendary Monsterverse in 2018’s ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’.

2. Mothra
First Appearance: Mothra (1961)

Easily one of the most popular Kaiju’s of all-time is Mothra, the giant god moth. Only Godzilla himself has made more Toho movie appearances than Mothra with her 11 including 4 of her own standalone movies. Sometimes an enemy of Godzilla but quite often an ally she’s beaten Godzilla more than any other monster. While Mothra may have the gentle appearance but has many powerful qualities. She can fly up to mach 5, can drop poisonous reflecting scales, fires laser beams from the antenna and poisonous stingers are launched from the thorax. If that isn’t enough, she’s also immortal. Whenever Mothra dies she’s re-incarnated into an egg. After hatching Mothra’s still powerful even in a larval form. Mothra will make her first appearance in the Legendary Monsterverse in 2018’s ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’.

1. Ghidorah
First Appearance: Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964)

King Ghidorah is Godzilla’s arch-nemesis and one of the strongest of all the monsters. Ghidorah’s appearance has changed a few times but it’s almost always three heads, two feet, two tails and giant wings. Usually an alien villain, Ghidorah was once a hero in Giant Monsters All-Out Attack as the strongest of the Guardian Monsters meant to protect the Earth. Ghidorah can fly, even in space and can use it’s wings to produce hurricane-force wings. Each of it’s necks can be used to grapple and constrict and each of it’s three heads can shoot powerful gravity beams from the mouth. Different versions have had powers like an energy shield, energy absorbtion, regeneration and wing-based lightning bolts. Ghidorah is expected to be the protagonist of the Legendary Monsterverse in 2018’s ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’.

With so many different monsters introduced in the long history of Toho’s Godzilla, it was incredibly difficult to pick just 10. I’m already thinking about doing a non-Godzilla Top 10 Kaiju Monster list too. Make sure to come back next Tuesday for Top 10 Horror Movie Weapons!
