Top 10 Tuesday: Horror Comedies

This week’s Top 10 takes a look at the films that manage to perfectly blend humor with horror.

I thought this would be an easy one but the order was more difficult than I expected. I’m pretty sure I left some great ones out of the final 10.

Honorable Mention, Idle Hands (1999)

“Why would we go to hell? We’re not bad, we’re not exactly good or anything, but at least we don’t go around killing people!”

This underrated late 90’s gem includes scene-stealing comedy from Seth Green.

10. The Lost Boys (1987)

“My own brother a God damned shit sucking vampire! You wait ’til mom finds out buddy!”

I wouldn’t say The Lost Boys is really a comedy at all, but it includes some very hilarious moments thanks to Corey Haim and Corey Feldman.

9. Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010)

“Oh hidy ho officer, we’ve had a doozy of a day. There we were minding our own business, just doing chores around the house, when kids started killing themselves all over my property.”

Likable leads with great chemistry that leads to blood soaked laughs. How does Dale & Tucker not have a sequel yet???

8. Night of the Creeps (1986)

“Zombies, exploding heads, creepy-crawlies… and a date for the formal. This is classic, Spanky.”

Tom Atkins nails burnt out cop character of Ray Cameron perfectly while delivering some of the best one-liners in the entire movie.

7. The Toxic Avenger (1984)

“All right everybody, drop your tacos or I’ll blow your brains out.”

Lloyd Kaufman’s unintentional classic b-movie perfectly spoofs both monster and superhero movies. It’s vulgar, it’s trashy, it’s hilarious.

6. What We Do in the Shadows (2014)

“Leave me to do my dark bidding on the internet!”

Who would have thought the funniest horror mockumentary of all-time would come from New Zealand? Well a lot of people considering it’s from the duo behind HBO’s Flight of the Conchords.

5. Dead Alive (1992)

“I see you’ve come across your uncle’s old stag films. Is this the one with the donkey and the chambermaid?”

Long before the Lord of the Rings, director Peter Jackson was making us laugh at zombie babies and cringe at lawnmower zombie kills.

4. Evil Dead 2 (1987)

“I don’t think so. We just cut up our girlfriend with a chainsaw. Does that sound “fine”?”

One of the biggest differences between Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 is the extra humor. And boy does it deliver in that department with the Three Stooges-esque physical slapstick comedy from Bruce Campbell.

3. The Return of the Living Dead (1985)

“What? What the hell are you doing with a bunch of rabid weasels?”

One of my all-time favorite movies, the punk rock fueled unofficial sequel to Night of the Living Dead is zombie horror splattered in hilarious quotes and one-liners.

2. Young Frankenstein (1974)

“Honey, did you see I put another hamper in the bathroom? This one’s for your shirts, the other’s just for socks and poo-poo undies.”

Mel Brooks take on the Universal Monsters version of Frankenstein, of course it’s hilarious. Marty Feldman’s Igor steals this one though while breaking through the fourth wall multiple times.

1. Shaun of the Dead (2004)

“Just look at the face: it’s vacant, with a hint of sadness. Like a drunk who’s lost a bet.”

It may be more of a comedy with a horror setting but who cares. The first of many films for duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, Shaun of the Dead is one of the (if not the) funniest of all the horror comedies.
